The Ocean Race Selects St. Pete-Clearwater as the Host City |
St. Pete-Clearwater is preparing for its close-up on the world stage as it becomes the exclusive North American host city for the 15th edition of The Ocean Race in 2027. This marks a historic first for Florida’s Gulf Coast, bringing one of the world’s most prestigious sailing events to our destination.
The race itself—often called the "Everest of Sailing"—arrives from Itajaí, Brazil, making the St. Petersburg Yacht Club its home from May 4 through May 16, 2027. After the stopover, the fleet will depart on their 4,500-nautical-mile transatlantic leg to Cascais, Portugal.
Hosting the only North American stop for an event of such caliber provides an unparalleled platform to showcase our destination's coastal communities to a global audience.

Designed and painted by local artist , the aquatic-inspired artwork was installed in a hallway connecting the aquarium’s original and expanded buildings.
The mural highlights the marine animals in the aquarium’s care and was designed to create a more accessible pathway for guests navigating the facility. By featuring themes of resilience and community, the artwork serves as a permanent addition to the restored infrastructure while honoring the stories of the aquarium's rescued residents.

The 2026 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg delivered massive national exposure for the destination, as nearly 3 million people saw the "Sunshine City" showcased across a high-octane weekend. The event's national broadcast reach was anchored by the IndyCar Series season opener, which drew 1.4 million viewers on FOX—matching its strong performance from last year. This year’s impact was further amplified by the historic addition of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, which attracted more than 1 million additional viewers in its inaugural street course appearance.
The momentum extended well beyond traditional television, with more than 486,000 combined views on IndyCar and NASCAR’s official YouTube channels for race highlights.
